BI4All City
A Microcity
BI4All City is a peculiar example of urban and architectural conversion in an ex-industrial area now undergoing transformation: Marvila/Braço de Prata. The project utilises the spatiality and materiality of two existing warehouses (A and B) of an old sugar factory, creating a true “microcity” with various functions: work, leisure, dining, housing, play, and civic meeting. The solutions found respect the constructive matrix of the existing buildings, enhancing their architectural qualities.
Warehouse A houses the open-plan work areas, offices, meeting rooms, and auditoriums. A new helicoidal staircase in exposed concrete stands out, providing access to the upper floor, marking one of the entrances to the complex. The central double-height space is reinforced by the presence of tall vegetation that dialogues with the pre-existing metal pillars and trusses. Warehouse B accommodates the kitchen and dining areas, leisure areas, and housing for staff and visitors. Here, too, a large metal staircase connects to the upper floor, where five studio apartments with kitchen support are aligned.
The materials used—metal mesh coverings and partitions in plexiglass or fabric curtains—and the selected furniture—common office material and rarer design pieces—generate a succession of diverse environments, mixing industrial pragmatism with lounge comfort.
