Serralves Haegue Yang

Planning and coordination of the construction of the installation "Opaque Wind Park in Six Folds" by the artist Haegue Yang for the Serralves Foundation.

For this edition of the Sonae//Serralves Project, the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art presents "Opaque Wind Park in Six Folds" by the Korean artist Haegue Yang (Seoul, 1971) in the gardens of Serralves Park. The expressly commissioned work consists of five partially arched towers of varying dimensions constructed in brick and connected through a geometric arrangement of slabs.

Occupying an area of about 70 square meters, this ambitious sculptural complex invites the observer to walk through the hybrid landscape of its multiple structures. Yang's sculptural approach employs the layout of Islamic geometry, specifically the shape of the hexagon, created by subdividing a circle into six equal parts or folds.

Square units of 72 x 72 cm delineate the space covered by the slabs and the towers of varying heights constructed with fired clay brick, in an accumulation of geometric configurations. The three different chromatic tones of the bricks contribute to the ornamental scheme of the towers and their interconnected facades.

Embedded in the complex built by Yang are various species of plants and vegetation, including succulents, ivies, and grasses, intended to grow, climb, bloom, and die over the year that the commissioned work will be present in the Serralves gardens.
