Hotel MOOV Freixo

The Great Framework

This project presents a challenge: to design a three-star hotel with approximately one hundred rooms, ensuring the standardisation of construction systems, the economy of finishes, and the originality of the architectural solution.

The solution lies in creating a large structural “framework” adapted to the shape of the corner plot but also to the neighbouring gables, whose “vertebrae” order the internal compartmentalisation.

The structure, designed in red-coloured exposed concrete, develops rhythmically, serialising the construction elements and coverings, as well as the composition of the facades. When reaching the street, these “vertebrae” fold into vertical panels, orienting the openings towards the best light and ensuring their concealment when the complex is viewed from the corner. The same occurs on the rear facade, where the rhythm of the vertical panels helps to compose the successive openings in their relationship with the rear garden.

The difference in level between the garden and the street allows organising service areas, kitchens, and the breakfast room (on the -1 floor), the reception and administrative areas (on the ground floor), articulating them with some special rooms. On the upper floors, the “vertebrae” order the remaining rooms according to the allowed height on each front.

Located in the former industrial area of Freixo in Campanhã, this complex evokes the memory of its old factories, also large frameworks of serialised and rhythmic construction.
